Estimating fish lengths

After reading lots of informational books about fish and doing a guided drawing lesson, the children each made 3 fish. They could be any size and color.

Once they were done, they had to place them on a large and very long piece of black paper that took up most of our room. We laid them out according to size, smallest to largest. They had to first estimate where they thought it should go. Then, when some got too close to tell, they measured with cubes.

We realized that some appeared longer because they were wider but they ended up being shorter after we measured them. The children had to make adjustments and then we all glued them down in order. The end result is awesome! It's in our hallway and the kids were so excited!

Fish are here!

We got our fish and guppies this week for our science study of living things. Mr. Mike from Premier Pets came to talk to the children about caring for the fish. He also told them about an opportunity for kids to "work" at the store for a couple hours each month as soon as they're 8. As you can imagine - they were all very excited about this! He said it's about a year long waiting list!

Today we changed the water and learned s lot about their habits, how to feed them, etc.

While moving the fish from one tank to the other, one of the fish played dead. So, we named him scaredy squirrel after one of our favorite book characters who does the same thing. The others we decided to name Flash and Flippy.

Make 5 Memory

Fact fluency through 5 is something we've been working on. Today the children learned how to play 'Make 5 Memory'. There are numbered cards 0-5 and dot cards, also 0-5. Each player takes turns flipping over two cards, hoping to make a combination for 5. They really liked this game!
