Exploring shapes

We have been reviewing 2 dimensional shapes and learning about 3 dimensional shapes. We've been sorting, comparing, and describing similarities and differences. We've learned about edges, vertices, and faces. This is a lot of information and advanced vocabulary, so we will revisit these concepts often. 

Reading workshop

This is what Reader's Workshop looks like. Each child has their own book box with about 8 books. They "read" independently for about 5 minutes. While they're reading, I'm teaching the children how to "shop" for books. 

Fun Run!

Despite the weather, the kids had a great time doing the Fun Run on Friday. They ran the halls and enjoyed an apple after. While it would've been nice to run outside, they didn't seem to mind. 

5 frame fun!

We learned about 5 frames this week. We will soon move to ten frames. These are extremely helpful for children to develop number sense and, later we will use them to understand how addition and subtraction are complementary operations. Here we are playing 5 frame memory with a friend.

Math fun

Last week we learned a partner math game called "Roll and Cover". It's great for learning how to recognize sets of dots as numbers and really helps develop number sense. It's also simple enough that it is a great first partner game to play. 

We also worked on making numbers with linking cubes.
